New Grant Guidelines: Fairer, Clearer, and More Aligned with Remote Australia

The Connellan Airways Trust has released new Grant Guidelines designed to make applying simpler, fairer, and more transparent for people and organisations across remote and very remote Australia.

These updates take effect for the next round opening 1 November 2025, and reflect CAT’s ongoing commitment to best-practice philanthropy, ensuring every dollar delivers meaningful, measurable outcomes for remote communities.

           Why the Guidelines Have Changed

Over the past year, CAT has reviewed its granting process to ensure it reflects best practice in community philanthropy. The new approach brings:

            Clarity for applicants through structured questions and clear eligibility criteria;

            Consistency for assessors via a weighted scoring system;

            Fairness in outcomes by comparing applications on their demonstrated need, impact, and alignment with CAT’s purpose;

Recognition of real delivery costs through a “pay-what-it-takes” model that allows for modest project overheads and contractor fees.

Together, these updates ensure CAT’s grants are simpler to apply for, easier to assess, and more impactful for remote Australia.

           What’s New for Applicants

           For Individuals

Grants of up to $10,000 can now support practical, well-defined activities such as:

Study or training fees, including TAFE and vocational courses

Travel or accommodation for placements or professional development

Tools, materials, or technology enabling participation in study or work

Initiatives that improve local health, wellbeing, or leadership capacity

Each application will be assessed on six key questions: what you want to do, why it’s needed, who’s involved, your budget, how success will be measured, and how you’ll share outcomes.

           For Organisations

Eligible organisations include registered not-for-profits and community groups auspiced by an NFP.
Funding supports small, community-led projects that:

            Strengthen local connection and participation

Projects may include staff or contractor costs directly tied to delivery, essential materials, modest overheads or travel to remote program sites.

A training applicant might describe how a short course in mental health first aid will allow them to better support isolated community members.

A community organisation could outline how a new local event reduces social isolation, with data on expected participants and local partners.

A health professional might demonstrate how new clinical skills will expand access to early care for remote families.

The new guidelines are part of CAT’s commitment to building stronger communities through fair, transparent, and measurable funding.
By improving clarity and consistency, the Trust can better support individuals and organisations who are removing barriers, strengthening leadership, and creating opportunities across remote Australia.

Innovation, resilience, and connection across remote Australia

The Connellan Airways Trust’s September 2025 Grant Round revealed the remarkable diversity, creativity, and commitment of people living and working across remote and very remote Australia. From training programs and cultural exchanges to infrastructure and community wellbeing projects, this round reflected both the practical and personal ways remote Australians are tackling local challenges and building stronger futures.

Investing in Local Skills and Services

A consistent theme this round was the drive to build local capability, particularly in health and service delivery. For example, Katrina Molloy, a dedicated regional health professional, is undertaking specialist ultrasound training to expand access to early pregnancy care for women in Central Australia. Supporting this kind of local professional development helps ensure communities have skilled, sustainable services close to home.

Projects like Kulgera Gymkhana Club’s infrastructure upgrades and the William Creek Progress Association’s “Rage Cage” multi-use play area highlight how community spaces continue to play a vital role in the wellbeing of outback towns. These initiatives create safe, inclusive places for people to gather, celebrate, and stay active — especially important where social infrastructure is limited.

Several projects focused on giving young people the confidence and skills to lead, with strong representation from programs promoting cultural exchange and creativity. Both St Mary’s College and Live to Tell Your Story Inc will take students from remote regions to the Djinda Ngardak Culinary Program in Bunbury — an intercultural initiative that combines traditional knowledge, hospitality training, and connection to Country. For many participants, it’s a first step into industry pathways while strengthening pride in culture.

CAT also supported projects that address the realities of isolation and access for families living hundreds of kilometres from services. The Tambo Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association (ICPA) will help remote children access swimming and water-safety programs, covering the travel and lesson costs that often prevent participation. Similarly, Katy Hayes, a parent from Arckaringa Station, received support for travel so her boarding-school-aged son can return home during holidays — a simple but deeply impactful way to strengthen family connection and wellbeing.

The Trust continues to invest in knowledge-sharing that supports the future of Australia’s rangelands. Soils for Life will bring global expertise to the 2026 Regenerative Rangelands Conference in Longreach, connecting graziers with world-class regenerative agriculture practices. It’s a strong example of how targeted funding can amplify learning and improve land management across vast, remote landscapes.

Live to Tell Your Story Inc is partnering with Prepare Produce Provide (PPP) to support eight Aboriginal students from remote and regional outback communities, including the Central Desert, Pilbara, Gascoyne, and Kimberley to attend the Djinda Ngardak 2025 cross-cultural culinary program in Bunbury, Western Australia. The week-long experience brings together young people, Aboriginal Elders, leading chefs, and educators for an immersive program of cultural exchange, accredited hospitality training, and leadership development. Students will take part in masterclasses led by industry professionals, explore bush foods, traditional medicines, and sustainable cooking, and gain credits aligned with Certificate I & II in Hospitality and Cookery. The program culminates in a Gala Dinner, where participants showcase their culinary creations and newly learned skills. As the organisation explained, the project aims to “empower Aboriginal youth from the Outback by providing access to high-quality education and training, while celebrating culture and creating real employment pathways.” By funding travel for these students, CAT is helping remove one of the biggest barriers, distance, and enabling them to take part in an experience that builds pride, skills, and opportunity for their futures.

A highlight on the rural calendar, the Rural Ladies Day event brings together women from pastoral, agricultural, and remote communities to learn, share, and connect. This year’s program focuses on wellbeing, leadership, and the power of shared experience, supporting women who are often the backbone of their communities. CAT’s funding helps ensure this much-loved event continues to grow, fostering the next generation of rural leaders and advocates.

Soils for Life will use its Connellan Airways Trust grant to bring expert knowledge directly to remote Australia through the 2026 Regenerative Rangelands Conference, to be held at LaTrobe Station in Longreach, Queensland. The funding supports two keynote speakers, Eli Court, CEO of Soils for Life, and Alejandro Carrillo, an internationally recognised regenerative grazier from Mexico, who will share world-class insights on soil health, pasture restoration, and drought resilience. Their presentations, workshops, and mentoring sessions will give graziers and young land managers practical tools to strengthen productivity and ecological balance in some of Australia’s most challenging landscapes. As part of the International Year of the Rangelands, the conference will also host a Young Grazier Camp, helping participants aged 18–25 develop confidence, skills, and networks for the future. By connecting global expertise with local experience, this project supports the long-term sustainability of remote pastoral communities, ensuring that regenerative knowledge and best practice continue to grow well beyond the event.

The experience will culminate in a showcase dinner prepared and served by participants, celebrating culture through food and connection to Country. The program builds confidence, leadership, and pathways into hospitality and tourism while promoting sustainable food practices and pride in cultural identity.

This grant supports travel costs for her son, Aaron, who attends boarding school in Adelaide. The funding enables him to return home for school holidays, providing vital family time, connection to country, and support for his wellbeing during a significant period of transition. In many ways, it’s a small grant with profound human impact — one that directly reduces the isolation faced by remote families.

As CAT continues to build its Impact and Learning Framework, we look forward to sharing more stories from these inspiring recipients and celebrating the difference that community-led projects make across remote and outback Australia.

           From the EO

Hi everyone, I'm Declan Kelly, the new EO of Connellan Airways Trust.

I’ve just wrapped up my first few weeks as Executive Officer at the Trust, and it’s already been a genuinely inspiring start.

Earlier this month, I travelled to Alice Springs (Mparntwe) and had the chance to connect directly with some of the people and communities the Trust supports. A highlight was attending the Govies’ Muster and meeting the dedicated teachers, families and students from the Alice Springs School of the Air and the ICPA. Hearing about the creativity and resilience it takes to deliver education across vast distances really brought home why the Trust’s work matters.

At the Alice Springs Show, I enjoyed meeting local schools and community groups, many of whom already know Connellan and have received support in the past to bring important projects to life. It was great to see how the Trust’s legacy is woven into the local community in such practical and lasting ways.

I also met with the team from Red Dust and learned more about their community driven health and wellbeing programs. And of course, I couldn’t miss experiencing my first Territory Day, a pretty spectacular way to be welcomed, with fireworks lighting up the desert night.

Another highlight was catching up with NT Chief Minister, Lia Finocchiaro, to talk about the opportunities and challenges facing remote Australians, and where the Trust can help create even greater impact.

All in all, it’s been a warm, generous welcome into the Connellan Airways Trust community, and I’m excited to keep building on the Trust’s proud history.

After growing up in the Mareeba in North Queensland, Olivia is as a mustering helicopter pilot now based in WA’s Kimberley region and is working towards completing her sling rating over the coming year.

“Slinging or long lining is common practice during natural disasters such as foods or bush fires, which impact remote regions each season. Slinging is also used in day-to-day operations servicing remote communities and outback towns. I would be able to use this rating and skillset almost immediately as I continue to finesse my skills as an outback pilot.” Miss Anderson said.

Olivia has been recognised for her 100% safety record, her commitment to outback aviation and her pursuit and support of the opportunities for air work pilots within the NT and Kimberley region.

Connellan Airways Trust Chair, Mrs Liz Bird, commented on Miss Anderson’s dedication to her training and living and working in the bush. “Olivia has demonstrated excellent aviation ethics and competency and is an example for other outback pilots striving to upskill within the industry.”

“The Roger Connellan Award supports aviation development for rural and remote people, recognising that bush pilots are vital to enhancing the capacity of remote places. It is important that we support these skills to retain them in rural and remote areas” Mrs Bird said.

The Award was established in 2017 in memory of Roger Connellan who was a pilot with Connellan Airways. Roger rose to Chief Check and Training Captain. He was a highly decorated and regarded aviator who also helped establish the Alice Springs Aero Club in 1964. This success brought aviation training to the outback. The Award aims to give the opportunity, by provision of financial support to people living in Outback Australia for professional development in an aviation related field excluding initial licensing.

Connellan Airways Trust offers several grant and scholarship opportunities for outback people. This Award is one of two exceptional Awards that honours the foundations of the Trust through the Connellan Airways airline. Since establishment of the Connellan Airways Trust in 1981, it has been able to provide more than $5 million to residents across Outback Australia, supporting the advancement of outback skills and capabilities.

Connellan Airways Trust and Charles Darwin University (CDU) proudly congratulate Kelly Cooper and Max Fleming as the 2024 recipients of the Connellan Airways Trust Outback Scholarship.

These $5000 scholarships, now in their fourth year, aim to support geographically remote students in pursuing Degree Education or Vocational Education Training (VET) goals.

Chair of Connellan Airways Trust, Mrs Liz Bird emphasised the significance of these scholarships in addressing the challenges faced by outback students. "Our scholarships alleviate barriers to education and training for remote students.”

"By supporting these individuals, we are addressing skills shortages in the Territory. Enabling people to remain in their communities and contribute to local skills needed is vital for sustainability of remote locations." Said Mrs Bird.

CDU Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman said the scholarship recognises the additional pressures regional and remote students face when it comes to further education.

“The Outback Scholarship is important as it recognises and tries to remove the additional barriers regional and remote students face while studying,” Professor Bowman said.

“CDU is committed to enhancing and expanding education and training opportunities in regional and remote areas across the Northern Territory and are grateful to Connellan Airways Trust who continue to support our students.”

Among this year's recipients is Kelly Cooper, a third year Bachelor of Midwifery student residing in Nhulunbuy, north-east Arnhem Land. Kelly highlighted the financial strains of traveling for placements and simulations, expressing gratitude for the scholarship's assistance.

Max Fleming a local Central Australian pursuing a Master of Occupational Therapy, echoed similar sentiments. He emphasised the support the scholarship provides in managing placement-related expenses and balancing study with work commitments.

“This scholarship will financially support me to attend intensives and continue working whilst studying, easing the emotional stress of balancing work and study commitments, and providing time for study.” said Max.

Miss Alana Clark has been selected as the recipient of the prestigious 2024 E.J. Connellan Award, presented by the Connellan Airways Trust. Born out of her experiences in remote Queensland, Alana's commitment to addressing healthcare disparities in rural areas has earned her this award scholarship.

Alana's upbringing inspired her to pursue a Bachelor of Nursing Science – Bachelor of Midwifery. Now in her third year of study, she actively contributes to bridging the gap between rural and urban healthcare accessibility. Alana will use the $10,000 Award to alleviate the financial burden experienced as a rural university student relocating for studies.

“Growing up on a rural cattle property ignited my passion for bridging the healthcare gap between urban and remote. Following graduation, I aim to acquire invaluable workplace experience in complex cases to assist in serving in rural and remote areas throughout Australia,” Alana shared.

Chair Mr. Mark Coffey announces Miss Bessie McGaffin to be the recipient of the 2023 Roger Connellan Award.

Bessie will receive $20,000 towards her aviation training goals.

After growing up on a beef farm in regional Victoria, Bessie has based herself in both very remote NT and QLD for the past 10 years. Having completed a degree in agriculture, and her private pilot’s license, Bessie is working on a remote station as a Station Hand and Pilot in the Barkley region.

Over the coming year Bessie aims to complete her commercial pilots license (CPL) and gain experience in different aviation machines and operations in the agricultural industry.

“Completing my CPL will help me to continue living my dream and contribute to the aviation industry operating in remote Australia at a higher, more experienced, and safer level. I believe the combination of commercial training and my station experience will help me in becoming an asset and contributor to the aviation industry servicing remote Australia.” Miss McGaffin said.

Mr Coffey commented on Miss McGaffin’s community minded approach to living and working in the bush. “Bessie has demonstrated a commitment not only to advancing her aviation skills, but as an emerging community leader.”

“The Roger Connellan Award supports aviation development for rural and remote people, recognising that bush pilots are vital to enhancing the capacity of remote places. It is important that we support these people to retain them in rural and remote areas” Mr Coffey said.

The Award was established in 2017 in memory of Roger Connellan who was a pilot with Connellan Airways. Roger rose to Chief Check and Training Captain. The Award aims to give the opportunity, by provision of financial support to people living in Outback Australia for professional development in an aviation related field excluding initial licensing.

The Outback Major Grant 2023 focuses on ‘Sustainable, Innovative Services’ in the outback. The Maganda Makers Business Club - Personal Smarts program will be collaborating with Indigenous women entrepreneurs mentoring Maganda Makers (participants) as they navigate the personal and professional hurdles that emerge in business.

“Ultimately, this program improves the financial strength and empowerment of women, their families, and their communities in very remote Australia. The innovative approach to long term change for the participants, is impressive and we look forward to seeing participant outcomes” Mr Coffey commented.

The project is grassroots led, with a trauma informed approach to capacity building, maintaining links to cultural inclusiveness and real-life support for women in the Kimberley. “Business Builder Navigators” (business mentors) work with up to 100 aspiring and emerging businesswomen to develop and manage business as an entrepreneur, teaching money management, and business skills, across a range of industries. It is supporting participants to obtain the resources required to drive social and economic transformation for themselves, and their families.

The project increases successful Indigenous businesswomen on-country through an innovative mentorship program that role-models and upskills through relatable examples of women acting to grow through business.

“Founded on a strengths-based model, the program honours and amplifies Aboriginal Women’s wisdom and non-linear ways of working. This means taking as long as is needed to see sustained change emerge for Indigenous women entrepreneurs and their communities.” said Kimberley Jiyigas Managing Director Natasha Short.

Due to the generosity of many and the efforts of E.J Connellan, the Trust continues to support people in Outback Australia through a variety of grants and scholarships 40 years later.

Celebrating 40 years, Connellan Airways Trust was established in Alice Springs by founder E.J Connellan. The Trust offers a significant range of grant and scholarship opportunities to people living in the outback.

Partnering with CDU for the first time in 2021, Chair Mark Coffey said the Trust is pleased to be continuing this scholarship with the university.

“We purposely made this scholarship versatile to support not only higher education, but skills-based VET and short courses. It’s all about capacity building in the outback,” Mr Coffey said.

Charles Darwin University’s Director of Advancement, Simon Matthias says the university places enormous importance on supporting remote students achieve their education goals. “The Northern Territory spans approximately one sixth of Australia’s landmass and yet is home to just one percent of the Australia’s population. No other Australian university serves such a large area of the continent, in such remote locations but it is critical that everyone, irrespective of where they live, has access to the same education opportunities.”

“The Connellan Airways Trust Outback Scholarship financially supports students and eases some of the challenges facing outback students in pursuing education and training opportunities,” he said.

“Veterinary Science is a demanding degree. The final year placements are paramount in gaining experience and professional development in the rural areas I intend to work in eventually. But when you are travelling across the outback for placements several times a year, it is challenging financially. I am so grateful to have this support”.

Mr Coffey said “Honor has proven her dedication to the outback which is a crucial element of the E.J. Connellan Award. We are aware of the demand for rural and remote vets and we hope that in supporting Honor, she will continue contributing to supporting people in the outback.”

Chair Mr. Mark Coffey announces Mr Munro Hardy to be the recipient of the 2022 Roger Connellan Award. Mr Hardy will receive $10,000 towards obtaining his private fixed-wing license.

Munro has spent over thirteen years in the Northern Territory and is now based at Carbeen Park, west of Katherine. Munro began his commercial helicopter licence in 2014 and has since flown all over the NT and east Kimberley. During this time, he recognised the consistent challenges faced by livestock producers collecting data.

This led Munro to a sabbatical working with a Sydney based agriculture company exploring technology solutions for meat and livestock producers. Now back in the NT, Munro is supporting agricultural producers with the planning and implementation of technologies that assist producers in building capacity for growth.

“There are many emerging tech solutions in agriculture at the moment, but a lot of this technology needs support. By completing my private fixed wing license, I can continue to serve those living in the outback by providing this directly onsite” said Mr. Hardy.

“Munro has demonstrated his commitment to the outback and his desire to improve his technical aviation capacity in a way that provides service into the outback” said Mark Coffey, Chair of the Connellan Airways Trust.

“His desire to enhance remote producers’ capacity for data collection and business management, and his leadership in delivering these skills is commendable. Bush pilots are imperative in remote locations and having support for technology without having to wait months for tech support could change the way that producers work into the future,” said Mark Coffey.

Mr Coffey remarked on Munro’s achievements noting he is also a Nuffield Scholar and has completed the NTCA Future Leaders program. “His desire to increase his aviation skills in support of the outback in Australia is evident.”

The Award was established in 2017 in memory of Roger Connellan who was a pilot with Connellan Airways. Roger rose to Chief Check and Training Captain.

Connellan Airways Trust Chair Mr Mark Coffey has announced The University of Queensland “Cape York Recycling Research Project” is the recipient of the $50,000 Outback Major Grant in 2022.

The project aims to support the advancement of people living in Far North Queensland through innovative recycling solutions.

The Outback Major Grant was introduced by the Trust in 2021 aiming to address contemporary challenges in outback Australia. This year’s focus was on ‘sustainable recycling in the bush’. The Cape York Recycling Research Project will be working towards enhancing innovative recycling in rural, remote, and regional outback communities; developing and scaling new opportunities towards the circular economy; and supporting bush recycling through world-class research, small-scale enterprise development, training, and education programs.

“It has been many years since the Trust has supported research like this in the outback, however this project fit well with the intent of the Outback Major Grant this year,” said Mr Coffey.

“Not only will the Cape York region benefit from a clear roadmap on recycling sustainability and prospective social enterprise, but the entire region will have future opportunity for upskilling and increased employment openings in the Outback they love,” said Mr Coffey.

The project will identify the factors contributing to the recycling challenges through a place-based approach, as well as developing a roadmap in partnership with local stakeholders for the successful adoption and scaling of recycling solutions. The roadmap is intended to provide a strategic framework to guide the next stages towards practical and novel approaches, which hopefully will be transferable to similar regions in the Outback. Professor Hurriyet Babacan from UQ’s Australian Institute of Business and Economics and Dr Anya Phelan from UQ’s Business School will be leading the project and working with local stakeholders on the ground.

“The long-term vision for this program is to create lasting impact by building capacity for recycling and waste management options on the Cape York Peninsula and other regions of the Outback,” they said.

Mr Coffey stated that the Trust is looking forward to seeing the project advance sustainable recycling in the region, whilst simultaneously advancing the social and economic benefits of the outback people who live there.

Miss Lori Fogarty is a Territory local having grown up on Lucy Creek Station, northeast of Alice Springs. Following the completion of high school Lori completed a Bachelor of Agricultural Science at the University of Adelaide before taking a break to be a Governess at Phillip Creek station for twelve months.

Miss Fogarty resumed her studies in 2022 pursuing a Masters in Secondary Teaching, Majoring in Agriculture at the University of New England in Armidale. Lori is passionate about teaching students the importance of agriculture in a growing population.

“The deliverance of agriculture lessons as part of distance education has been missing for many years. My ambition is to educate our remote children in the importance of where our food comes from, whilst incorporating sustainable farming into curriculums.” Said Miss Fogarty.

“I’m looking forward to learning how to educate students, both from remote and populated areas to assist them in fully grasping the importance of agriculture and learning the sciences behind our most important resources. Agriculture is often forgotten about in the curriculum, especially in remote areas even though so many families are a working part of it. I aim to develop a program which enables all regional and remote students to be properly informed.”

Mr Coffey said “Lori has strong connections to the bush and has proven her dedication to the outback which is an important element of the E.J. Connellan Award. As remote and rural Australia undergoes rapid change, the need for rural and remote education progress is only increasing. We hope that in supporting Lori, she will continue contributing to the advancement of people in the outback.”

Connellan Airways Trust Chair Mr Mark Coffey has announced Mr Jay Mohr-Bell of Pancho Beef to be the recipient of the Outback Major Grant in 2021. Mr Mohr-Bell, located on Mathison Station in the far north-west of the NT, will receive $50,000 towards a pilot communications project.

The Outback Major Grant was introduced by the Trust in 2021 to support the advancement of the outback through innovative technology and communications. Mr Mohr-Bell’s project aims to install, test and report on an experimental private communications network exploring different technologies for areas without mobile phone service.

Mr Mohr-Bell has been pursuing a solution to this ongoing challenge for over 10 years which has led to his involvement in several remote communications committees. “This type of technology has yet to be tested in these conditions. No one really knows if a private communication network with higher capacity and range, is the practical, reliable and cost-effective method for remote data collection in harsh environments”

“Data collection, analysis and communication is core to almost every new agricultural innovation and technology which has the potential to dramatically enhance the productivity and efficiency of extensive agricultural systems. But they require communication networks to deliver data back to a central point for analysis and action. Existing communication systems via satellite, UHF and point to point wifi are unreliable, costly and limiting. Areas with 3/4/5G mobile coverage can avoid many of the issues however most of remote and very remote Australia do not have access to this coverage. We hope this pilot will provide a long-term solution that other people in the industry can use in the future”

“With the support of this grant, the project will determine the costs of constructing and maintaining the network, identify practical implementation and operational challenges and provide a demonstration site for other potential users of similar systems.” Said Mr Mohr-Bell.

“The Trust was impressed with the perseverance of Pancho Beef to pursue communications options that will work in the bush. Whilst there have been many technological advances in the past few years, communications in very remote locations remain unreliable and costly. This project could be the difference that the agriculture industry in the northern outback needs to move toward a future that sees business in the bush just as connected as business in the cities. Which aligns with the vision of the Trust for a thriving outback.” Said Mr Coffey.

The Trust was established by E.J Connellan (the NT pioneer, aviator and pastoralist among many endeavours) and the Connellan Airlines shareholders in 1981 following the sale of the NT based airline. Due to the generosity of many and the efforts of E.J Connellan the Trust continues to support people in Outback Australia through a variety of grants and scholarships.

The Outback Major Grant will be offered again in 2022.

Connellan Airways Trust Chair, Mr. Mark Coffey has announced James Christian to be the recipient of the 2021 Senior E.J. Connellan Award. James will receive $10,000 over the two years of his degree.

James’ love of the bush flourished after moving to Central Australia in 2012 taking up a position with a remote cattle station, following involvement in a large agricultural company in NSW. Since moving to the region James has been an active participant in local community groups and has worked with several stations in the region.

James is pursuing a Master of Public Leadership and Policy from the University of New South Wales, over the next two years. In his present line of employment as a public servant, James recognises the requirement for clear, concise, and future-proof policy and legislation.

“Studying in this field will enable my participation in such matters to be much more informed both at work and in the community. As a result of my study, I would like to be able to steer the focus of public policy and its development towards supporting the members of remote and outback communities, who are largely under-represented. I am focused on strengthening the ties between bush people and communities and the rest of the country.” Said James.

Mr Coffey said “James has strong connections to the bush and has proven his dedication to the outback which is an important element of the E.J. Connellan Award. As remote and rural Australia undergoes rapid change, the need for advocating for positive development is only increasing. We hope that in supporting James, he will remain in the bush and continue to support the advancement of people in the outback.”

The Award was established in 1988 by the Connellan Airways Trust in honour of the founder, the pioneer Northern Territory aviator and pastoralist, Edward Connellan (known as E.J or Eddie). Connellan Airways Trust Chair, Mr. Mark Coffey has announced Annalise Pearce to be the recipient of the 2021 Junior E.J. Connellan Award. Annalise will receive $20,000 over four years of her degree.

Annalise grew up in Kununurra, a town in far northern Western Australia located at the eastern boundary of the Kimberley. She is embarking on her first year studying Law at Curtin University in Perth. Annalise was an active member of her remote community and joined the Save The Children National Youth Ambassador program in 2017 to advocate for regional issues, including education inequality. As part of this program Annalise visited Canberra with other young people from around the country and it was here, she experienced the disparity of remote and urban services, opportunities, and support. This set the path for Annalise, who has chosen to study Law as a pathway of expertise and credibility in raising awareness of the challenges for remote living.

“I found it confronting to realise how little others in the group from the city areas, knew about the reality of living remotely; the travel and the lack of services and access people face daily. In Canberra I was able to talk about things that the others had no concept of. I want to help. I miss home every day, but I know I need to be here to make a difference to remote and regional areas into the future. I plan on being a powerful advocate for remote residents when I have completed my degree and have some professional experience behind me” said Annalise.

Mr Coffey said “Annalise is committed to supporting and assisting people in the outback which is an important element of the E.J. Connellan Award. We are happy to support Annalise given the additional costs that people from outback Australia have in accessing specialist courses such as Law. Remote Australia is rapidly changing and in some places the gap between services in remote and urban locations is only increasing. We hope that in supporting Annalise, she will return to the bush and continue to advocate and champion positive change and advancement for people in the outback.”

Two scholarships will be offered to outback residents up to the value of $5000 each, providing financial support to remote NT residents enrolled in a course at Charles Darwin University.

         Congratulations Robert Bailey

Congratulations to Mr Robert Bailey, who has been announced as the Roger Connellan Award recipient of 2020!

The Trust has awarded Robert $10,000 to complete his low-level rating and mustering endorsement as well as his visual flight rules (VFR) night rating.

Robert lives on Saxby Downs Station in outback Queensland and first attained his private pilot’s license in 2014. This has enabled him to better fulfill his role as manager at the station. The father of three, is also First Officer in the Cambridge Rural Fire Brigade and was actively involved in the recovery effort of the 2019 floods. Robert piloted people to and from Richmond to assist with immediate efforts to animals and rescue people.

Robert says “Adding a low level and mustering endorsement as well as a VFR night rating will allow me to expand my flying skills and knowledge, particularly flying in the agricultural industry. During the 2019 floods I flew for 10 days volunteering my time to help those in need of food, medicine, parts or just a lift to town. This gave me great personal satisfaction. In times of need in the bush, aviation is often one of the most critical parts in any disaster or emergency and I love to be part of it. I feel these endorsements will bring a fresh level of safety and understanding to my flying”

“Robert has demonstrated his commitment to aviation in outback Australia. His role on the station and his volunteer capacity with the fire bridge made him the ideal candidate for this Award. Aviation plays a vital role in the outback and Robert’s commitment to ensuring safety when in the air is commendable. The board was impressed with the commitment Robert has shown to his flying goals and is very pleased to grant this Award to Robert” said Mark Coffey.

The Award was established in 2017 in memory of Roger Connellan who was a pilot with Connellan Airways. Roger rose to Chief Check and Training Captain and was a highly decorated and regarded aviator. He also helped establish the Alice Springs Aero Club in 1964 to bring aviation training to the outback. He was the son of pioneering aviator and founder of the Trust, E.J Connellan. The Award aims to give the opportunity, by provision of financial support to people living in Outback Australia for professional development in an aviation related field excluding initial licensing.

Connellan Airways Trust offers several grant and award opportunities for outback people. This Award is one of two exceptional Awards that honours the foundations of the Trust through the Connellan Airways airline. Since establishment of the Connellan Airways Trust in 1981, it has been able to provide more than $3.9 million to residents in isolated, rural, and remote Australia, supporting the advancement of outback skills and capabilities.

Josiah Murphy, a past recipient of the Connellan Airways Trust Roger Connellan Award recently completed his flying instrument rating and night rating. The Trust were pleased to be part of the journey for Jo, who received the inaugural award in 2017.

The Roger Connellan Award is designed to support outback aviation excellence through additional training and assisted Jo with the completion of these ratings. Jo works in Alice Springs as qualified optometrist, and through his work provides high quality primary eye care to people who live in isolated, remote, and rural locations in Central Australia.

Jo’s journey to obtain his instrument rating and night flying rating was a long one. After a few setbacks along the way, Jo was able to complete his training with Flight Standards.

Jo said “Working towards the night and instrument rating has been a big undertaking over the past couple of years. It was a much bigger than I initially anticipated. Finding a qualified instructor for this specialised aviation training is difficult and complicated but when you live remotely there are additional hurdles. Without the award, and the encouragement of the trust, I may not have seen it through.”

“I’m passionate about primary eye care in the outback. Working with Bill Robertson Eyecare Plus allows me to provide quality care to some of the most remote locations in Australia and this additional flight training enables me to do it with greater skill, proficiency and safety"

Now it's onwards and upwards for Jo, as he settles back into life as a flying optometrist in the centre.

The Roger Connellan Award was introduced in 2017 in honour of Connellan Airways aviator Roger Connellan who was the Chief Check and Training Captain (later known as Connair) and pioneer aviator E.J Connellan’s son. Roger was responsible for the department of Civil Aviation checks that pilots underwent.

Training, like the type of training undertaken by Jo for his aviation instrument ratings, is somewhat different for those living and working remotely. Connellan Airways Trust supports a range of grants designed to improve the lives of people living and working in outback Australia. We focus on education and health outcomes. Supporting people in the bush (isolated, rural, and remote) leads to an educated, healthy, and thriving outback Australia.

Connellan Airways Trust is pleased to again be partnering with Central Queensland University (CQU) funding remote outback scholarships in 2020.

This year the Trust congratulates the following recipients of the 2020 CAT-CQU Scholarships: Jessica McDougall; Bachelor of Nursing, Philippa Rumble; Bachelor of Education (Primary), Helen Anderson; Bachelor of Education (Secondary), Emmily Vary; Bachelor of Nursing.

Residing in rural and remote locations across Australia these scholars are studying through a multitude of approaches. Distance education has become more prevalent over recent years, (and in some cases compulsory during the 2020 COVID19 Health Pandemic) increasing opportunities for further study for people living in remote places. The CAT-CQU Scholarships support outback students through some of the challenges they face due to location and enable recipients to focus on their education priorities throughout the year. Working together with CQU the Trust can create a greater impact on education and development in the outback.

Phillipa, who studies through a mixed-mode of online and in-person tutorials in a remote town in Western Australia, is in her third year of a Bachelor of Education.

“As a rural student, who travels 100 km each way to attend each tutorial or professional practice day, I had added travel costs to contend with. Receiving these Connellan Airways Trust scholarships has meant that I am able to attend my tutorials and professional practices," she said.

Phillipa added “It’s important to add that the companies and people that provide CQUniversity scholarships are changing student lives. As a mother and member of my local school board, I know how hard it can be to find teachers that will invest, long term, in a rural or remote school. While it may sound silly, the scholarships have provided more than simply financial support; it has inspired me to prove I am a worthy investment to the scholarship donors. I feel that more than just the people I know, and love, believe in me and that is a powerful motivator,”

These scholarships are one way the Trust continues its work to support those from the outback. Whilst knowing that recipients will experience the positive impact of the scholarship as individuals, the wider outback will continue to benefit into the future from the skills and knowledge that these recipients impart into their communities. This is what developing the outback looks like. The Trust looks forward to continuing to partner with CQU into the future to provide these outback scholarships.

If you or someone you know is interested in a scholarship (or perhaps other grants offered to rural and remote people by the Trust) please

Connellan Airways Trust Chairman Mr. Mark Coffey today announced Mr. Sam Short to be the recipient of the 2019 Roger Connellan Award for Excellence in Aviation.

The Trust will provide financial assistance of $20,000 for Sam to complete his Diploma of Aviation and several flying endorsements in 2020. Sam will be studying at Tafe Queensland in support of his goal to provide flying services to remote areas of Central Australia.

Sam lives in Alice Springs and grew up on Bushy Park cattle station in the NT. He has been working towards his lifelong goal of becoming a helicopter pilot since he was young, when he spent time mustering in helicopters with family. Recently he completed his RPL fixed wing license and endorsements through the new Flight Standards at the Alice Springs Airport. Long term Sam would like to work with his brothers, providing a mix of trade services by air to those in remote locations.

Sam says “Flying has always been my absolute dream, and I’m am doing anything and everything in my power to move forward in that career path. It is an honour to receive the Roger Connellan Award and a big help to further my career and fulfil my dream of flying in the outback supporting people in remote locations.”

Mark Coffey says “Sam has demonstrated his commitment to aviation in outback Australia through the completion of his fixed-wing licenses and endorsements and through his enrolment in further education within the field. Aviation plays a vital role in outback Australia and Sam aims to support outback access to services, which is in the spirit of the Award. The board was impressed with the commitment Sam has shown to his flying goals and is very pleased to announce this Award”.

The Award is in memory of Eddie Connellan’s son Roger Connellan who was a bush pilot who rose to Chief Check and Training Captain of Connair, (He also helped establish the Alice Springs Aero Club in 1964). Curtis says "My two major passions are Outback Australia and Medicine. I have always loved the bush, my families beautiful cattle property and the people that live out there, however it is only since starting my degree that I have realised that there are some serious inequalities regarding health when comparing those living in regional areas to those in major cities. Some of those inequalities are because there is a serious lack of doctors and resources in those isolated areas. Yes, I am some time away from becoming a doctor but I am a very young proactive man and my dream is to make a difference. The sky is the limit and this award gives me the opportunity to reach that.”

Mr Coffey said “Curtis is committed to assisting people in the outback which is an important element of the E.J. Connellan Award. We are very happy to support Curtis given the additional costs that people from outback Australia have in accessing specialist courses such as medicine. Rural Australia needs more doctors and we hope that by supporting Curtis, he will return to the bush and provide a much needed service to people in the outback.”

The Chairman of the Connellan Airways Trust, Mr. Mark Coffey recently announced Ellen Litchfield to be the winner of the 2019 Senior E.J. Connellan Award. Ellen will receive $10,000 towards completing her Masters Of Sustainable Agriculture at CSU.

Ellen is from Wilpoorinna Station outside of Maree, South Australia. After completing primary school through School of the Air and secondary schooling as a border at Annesley College in South Australia, Ellen went on to achieve a Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Veterinary Biology at Charles Sturt University NSW. She finished 1st class Honours in 2012. In 2018 Ellen received a Nuffield Scholarship to investigate the effects of climate change on red meat production in arid and semi-arid rangelands.

Ellen says “I am passionate about securing a sustainable future for our community in this rapidly changing environment. I believe that great advocacy for outback communities is required to ensure that policy decisions effecting the community and livestock producers are beneficial to our area.” She says outback Australia is an extremely unique environment and covers such an expanse of land but research and resources for the area are very limited. As the world population continues to rise the ability of pastoralists to produce a protein source whilst maintaining a natural eco system will be of utmost importance.”

Mark Coffey says “The trust supports individuals in their pursuit of knowledge to support people that live in outback Australia. I am very pleased that we can assist Ellen in her research which will result in new and innovative ideas to enable pastoralists across the outback to achieve more sustainable outcomes. Research and Industry development provides new opportunities for outback Australia to continue to play a critical role in food production across the country and the Connellan Airways Trust is proud to play a role in this development”.
