Miss Alana Clark has been selected as the recipient of the prestigious 2024 E.J. Connellan Award, presented by the Connellan Airways Trust. Born out of her experiences in remote Queensland, Alana's commitment to addressing healthcare disparities in rural areas has earned her this award scholarship.

Alana's upbringing inspired her to pursue a Bachelor of Nursing Science – Bachelor of Midwifery. Now in her third year of study, she actively contributes to bridging the gap between rural and urban healthcare accessibility. Alana will use the $10,000 Award to alleviate the financial burden experienced as a rural university student relocating for studies.

“Growing up on a rural cattle property ignited my passion for bridging the healthcare gap between urban and remote. Following graduation, I aim to acquire invaluable workplace experience in complex cases to assist in serving in rural and remote areas throughout Australia,” Alana shared.

Connellan Airways Trust Chair Mrs Liz Bird said “Alana has proven her dedication to rural and remote places, which is a crucial element of the E.J. Connellan Award. Rural and remote nurses and midwives are essential to the liveability of these places, and we look forward to seeing Alana’s continuing contribution to improved healthcare accessibility”.

“Alana’s desire to mentor other young rural people and her community involvement was also highly regarded,” said Mrs Bird.

“Drawing from my upbringing in a resilient small community, I've witnessed first-hand the benefits of young people returning to their small communities. I firmly believe in empowering younger generations with resources and mentorship to elevate their skills, fostering self-sufficiency within communities and ensuring a sustainable pipeline of skilled professionals into the future,” said Alana.

The EJ Connellan Award was established in 1988 by the Connellan Airways Trust in honour of founder and Northern Territory pioneer aviator and pastoralist Edward J Connellan. The Award celebrates his trailblazing spirit and dedication to the advancement of the bush.

With a focus on education and health, the Connellan Airways Trust has supported rural, remote and outback communities for four decades through grants and scholarships, welcoming tax-deductible donations to continue its mission.

From the EO Hi everyone, I'm Declan Kelly, the new EO of Connellan Airways Trust. I’ve just wrapped up my first few weeks as Executive Officer at the Trust, and it’s already been a genuinely inspiring start. Earlier this month, I travelled to Alice Springs (Mparntwe) and had the chance to connect directly with some of the people and communities the Trust supports. A highlight was attending the Govies’ Muster and meeting the dedicated teachers, families and students from the Alice Springs School of the Air and the ICPA. Hearing about the creativity and resilience it takes to deliver education across vast distances really brought home why the Trust’s work matters. At the Alice Springs Show, I enjoyed meeting local schools and community groups, many of whom already know Connellan and have received support in the past to bring important projects to life. It was great to see how the Trust’s legacy is woven into the local community in such practical and lasting ways. I also met with the team from Red Dust and learned more about their community driven health and wellbeing programs. And of course, I couldn’t miss experiencing my first Territory Day, a pretty spectacular way to be welcomed, with fireworks lighting up the desert night. Another highlight was catching up with NT Chief Minister, Lia Finocchiaro, to talk about the opportunities and challenges facing remote Australians, and where the Trust can help create even greater impact. All in all, it’s been a warm, generous welcome into the Connellan Airways Trust community, and I’m excited to keep building on the Trust’s proud history. Next up, my first grant round. If you’re working on a project, supporting your local community or just want to chat about what we do, please get in touch via info@connellanairwaystrust.org.au . Looking forward to what’s ahead!
